F-4E Crash Site on the East Side of Tempiute Mountain

This site of an F-4E crash on March 23, 1982 on the east side of Tempiute Mountain is probably the easiest accessible and best-known crash site around the Nellis Ranges. Glenn Campbell gives very detailed directions to it in his Viewers Guide, and you can drive right up to it with any high-clearance vehicle. Over the years most of the wreckage has mysteriously disappeared but there are still a few larger pieces left.

The serial number of the plane is 73-1180, from the 4th TFW, Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C. Both crewmen, LTC Johnny Jones and 1LT John H. Knoff, died in the crash. Thanks to Chuck Clark for digging up that information.

Chunk of debris, probably part of the engine.

We found this piece laying right in the middle of the road.
