Part of the reason this gets so much press is that the assumption is military planes are armed, as if that would make the collision any worse than hitting another civilian plane. Fuel+air is just as bad as a bomb, and military planes are probably not armed. When Moffet (NUQ) was a real base, I would get military choppers fly over my house all the time. You could see the gun barrels. I always wondered if they were loaded.
