Putting aside the fact that the "donuts-on-a-rope" contrails seen in the late 1980s and 1990s were in no way created by a pulse detonation wave engine, Colonel Adelbert "Buz" Carpenter effectively threw a wrench into speculation about the codename Aurora referring to an SR-71 follow-on when he informed Ben Rich that he skillfully coined the Aurora codename to better conceal requested funding for procurement of the B-2 because the budget for the B-2 was expected to be difficult to conceal.

When print media outlet first reported on the Pentagon budget document mentioning the name Aurora in February 1985, they speculated that the codename Aurora referred to either the B-2 or F-117, and remarks by Carpenter and Rich about what Aurora truly was confirmed initial speculation that the codename Aurora had to do with requested funds for B-2 procurement.
