Lockheed’s initial design had a monstrous 267 foot wingspan and was propelled by two dual cycle turboshaft/turbojet engines. The turboshafts drove two twin bladed 47 foot propellers during cruise, but for takeoff and landing they operated as turbojets while the props were locked in horizontal position and feathered.
