If you want to read an interesting book that shows humans have been working on interesting alternative propulsion methods for more than just a few years the John A. LaViolette PhD book "Secrets of Antigravity Propulsion" (with the clickbait byline "Tesla, UFOs, and Black Aerospace Technology"). Bristling with mathematical formula and might bore the easily distracted it more or less discusses esoteric ideas like phase conjugate microwave propulsion, the old T. Townsend Brown's theory of electrohydrodynamics, as well as a number of other things and might explain some UFO sightings as things we have produced that are being tested. Includes potential contractors behind said vehicles. For people who liked "The Hunt for Zero Point" by Nick Cook but prefer the math behind it.
