Bill Sweetman was once the former editor for Jane's Information Group (during which time he became one of a handful of people to believe that the US Air Force in the early 1990s had replaced the SR-71 with a hypersonic aircraft). In 2007 he became editor-in-chief for Aviation Week and Space Technology, serving in that role until 2016, when he joined Northrop Grumman, working for the company from 2016 to 2023. Sweetman left Northrop Grumman last June and is now a member of Valkyrie Strategic Solutions LLC.

It is unclear if Lockheed Martin's unveiling of the SR-72 concept in 2013 ever made Sweetman reconsider his belief that the USAF deployed a hypersonic spyplane in the early 1990s just because there was no opposition within the USAF top brass to the SR-71's first retirement in March 1990. I remember that as late as 2006, in the Popular Science magazine article "The Top-Secret Warplanes of Area 51", Sweetman reaffirmed his belief that the putative hypersonic spyplane with which he erroneously associated the codename Aurora was in active development, largely unaware that Aurora was revealed by Ben Rich to be the Pentagon budget codename for requested funds for B-2 procurement.
