The string returned isn't really "wrong" per se, there are just different encoding formats. 11001001 is É in ASCII, � in UTF-8. The depiction of binary certainly denotes computer processing, and big E could represent the mathematical symbol epsilon, or just "big E" in the manner that Smythers suggested, which I'm inclined to believe. The other symbols look like an antenna main lobe and side lobes, or a modulated sine wave. I can't imagine where anyone would have gotten "UFO" out of that patch.
