The SpaceShipOne, despite being air-launched like the X-1, X-2, X-15, X-24, and Northrop lifting body vehicles. was a privately funded aerospace vehicle, and so is the SpaceShipTwo and SpaceShipThree. The DFS 346 designed in Nazi Germany prior to the end of World War II and which was test flown in the USSR after the Soviets got their hands on the DFS 346 documentation was also air-launched and government-funded like the X-1, X-2, X-15, X-24, and Northrop lifting bodies. SpaceShipOne used a feathering technique, unlike the X-20 Dynasoar, and SpaceShipTwo and SpaceShipThree have inherited the feathering technique from SpaceShipOne. Otherwise, SpaceShipOne and the spaceplanes built for Virgin Galactic have a different design philosophy than the X-1, X-2, and X-15, although their top speed is about as fast as that of the Bell X-2.
