I deeply suspect that the work on the unmanned F35 (QF) that Lockheed Martin completed (to the point of being able to have airframes ready in months if a manned/unmanned mix was desired) was where this ball started rolling.

Couple that unmanned effort from 2007/8, with HAVE RAIDER II back in 2015 (tested 2017), well, I deeply suspect that it all needed a little bit of a bigger platform, and voila, what is better than the cranked-arrow design that they have 25 years + experience with?
