Hello.

Some supersonic aircraft have a certain aerodynamic configuration that I'm curious about.

Typically, if you look at the Lockheed YF-12A, it had a ventral fin, as did the North American X-15, and the North American XB-70, had a delta wing tip that could be lowered by 25 or 65 degrees.

Why is this type of configuration used in supersonic flight?
What does it contribute to the aerodynamics of these aircraft?
