The top-secret B-2, which is covered with materials to absorb-but do not return-radar signals, is being built in California by Northrop Corp. and is expected to cost more than $275 million per plane.
Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.), chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said the B-2 will put targets in the Soviet Union at risk and "render obsolete billions of dollars of Soviet investment in their current air defense."
An artist's concept released by the Air Force showed a moderately V-shaped plane that is all wing and no fuselage in the traditional sense of aircraft.
Air Force Secretary Edward Aldridge said the Stealth bomber would make its maiden flight sometime in the fall from Northrop's Palmdale, Calif., plant to the Air Force Flight Test center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif"
