My previous posts assumed you were planning some off-roading. If you are only planning to visit the GL Rd gate, Back Gate, Black Mailbox (which isn't there any more) and other sites along the highway any car is fine. The dirt roads are very well maintained. If you want to visit sites such as the Powerlines Overlook you will need to rent a 4x4. Any high clearance 4x4 will do. Tour companies do not go up there.
