Part of this stems from the fact that the public was trained to sit back on a hijack and enjoy the side trip to Cuba knowing that they would arrive home safe and sound. After 9/11 the public has learned to take part in their own defense. One person has already been killed by fellow passengers when they restrained him by having a heavy passenger sit on him which accidentally suffocated him. Passengers are willing to fight small weapons such as corkscrews and box knives. A seat cushion will make a good shield. The cockpit is now locked with real doors instead of the flimsy weight saving doors that used to be there. If a crew member or passenger is threatened, the doors stay closed in the interest of the majority of the passengers. Highjacking a plane now needs real weapons and this is what the TSA is looking for.
