Two reasuons: The Back Gate, or North Gate, is a much chorter route for traffic coming from the north. Also, the Back Gate Road is a much easier way for large trucks. There are a few dips and tight curves in Groom Lake Road, from a couple of miles outside the perimeter until you get into the Groom Valley.
