From the Mercury News: I don't know how far inland you can get until the event can't be seen. The Mercury article indicates the delay until the signal arrives is 7 minutes, 26 seconds, while the NASA reports indicates the time of impact. [Just a nuance to consider if you are going to try to view the event.]

The crash will be visible only from the West Coast and Hawaii. But astronomers throughout the world will be ready to observe the aftermath as the globe turns and the comet rolls into view.
